Australia’s foodservice and supply chains are under pressure from rising costs and ongoing disruptions, with 43% of businesses now prioritising cost reduction over customer satisfaction. Most face challenges from natural disasters and infrastructure failures, leading to supplier diversification and calls for more government investment in freight and resilience. While 74% plan to adopt AI and automation to offset labour shortages, sustainability regulations and shifting consumer preferences toward organic and minimally processed foods are reshaping strategies. AFAB warns that these issues not only impact businesses but also threaten food security, consumer prices, job growth, and Australia’s global competitiveness.

Foodservice Rep’s first “Let’s Talk About It” survey has exposed persistent bullying in the hospitality industry, especially psychological abuse from managers or senior staff, often normalised in fast-paced, customer-focused environments. Most affected were those over 35, with 85% reporting serious personal impacts and 90% saying no disciplinary action was taken. Common issues included disparaging comments, unreasonable demands and intimidation, leaving many feeling anxious, insecure or burnt out—some even quit. Despite efforts to speak up, most didn’t seek internal support, and the bullying often remained unresolved. The survey calls for a cultural shift toward respectful leadership and mentorship, aligning with AFAB’s support for industry-wide change, including its partnership with R U OK? to promote mental well-being.

March 2025
The AFAB State of Play report 2024 highlights the pressure Australian farmers face due to rising inflation and production costs, threatening food security. With farmers essential to providing food and clothing, it’s critical that politicians in Canberra support policies that protect the farming industry. Currently, one in three families face food insecurity, and Australia has lost 15% of its farmland in the past 30 years. Proposed water diversion plans could cut farm production by $9 billion. To safeguard our food supply, the next government must back policies that support farmers and protect Australian agriculture.

He views this policy as essential for the recovery of small businesses and the hospitality sector.

What the new visa rules mean for hospitality workers
February 2025
AFAB’s Deputy Chair, Wes Lambert’s view on what the new visa rules mean for hospitality workers. New visa rules in Australia are worsening the shortage of baristas and café managers, with thousands of roles unfilled and no sponsorship pathway under the new visa system. Caps on international student work hours and limited working holiday visas are deepening the crisis, causing high turnover, lower service quality, and business uncertainty. The full impact is expected by October 2025, with calls for better training and permanent residency pathways.

In 2023, foodservice accounted for 36.4% of household food spending, with P&C outlets expanding their offerings beyond snacks to include healthier options and ready-to-heat meals. Key trends include longer stops due to EV charging boosting food demand, a coffee craze encouraging repeat visits, health-conscious choices for tradies and a continued need for quick meals. However, challenges such as limited parking, staffing shortages, high investment cost, and shifting consumer perceptions remain. The future looks bright, with opportunities for P&C outlets to innovate and cater to local needs while embracing quality food and convenience.

February 2025
Sharing insights from a recent Skynews discussion with Wes Lambert, Deputy Chair of AFAB, on the ongoing debate around government costings for hospitality industry support. Key takeaways:
- The Coalition’s proposed $250M/year policy aims to boost demand in the hospitality sector, which has been hit hard post-COVID, with 1 in 11 businesses facing insolvency in the past six months.
- The policy focuses on small businesses, addressing inequities where larger corporations can claim tax deductions for catering, while smaller businesses struggle.
- Challenges like reduced international tourism, cost-of-living pressures, and slim profit margins (3-4%) continue to weigh heavily on the industry.
This policy could be a game-changer for Australia’s 80,000+ foodservice businesses, driving much-needed demand and supporting recovery. Let’s hope for balanced solutions that empower small businesses and revitalise this vital sector!
