Fonterra cuts down plastic waste with Circular Communities Australia

AFAB member Fonterra has partnered with Circular Communities Australia’s Big Bag Recovery program to recycle hard-to-process industrial plastic bags into useful products like school chairs and water covers. With 14,000 bulk bags used annually, this initiative could cut over 57,000 kg of CO₂e and divert 40 tonnes of plastic from landfill each year. “It’s a key step in our sustainability goals,” says Fonterra’s Rosie Cotter. The new Toowoomba recycling plant marks a major win for Australia’s circular economy.

Tackling workplace bullying in hospitality

Foodservice Rep’s first “Let’s Talk About It” survey has exposed persistent bullying in the hospitality industry, especially psychological abuse from managers or senior staff, often normalised in fast-paced, customer-focused environments. Most affected were those over 35, with 85% reporting serious personal impacts and 90% saying no disciplinary action was taken. Common issues included disparaging comments, unreasonable demands and intimidation, leaving many feeling anxious, insecure or burnt out—some even quit. Despite efforts to speak up, most didn’t seek internal support, and the bullying often remained unresolved. The survey calls for a cultural shift toward respectful leadership and mentorship, aligning with AFAB’s support for industry-wide change, including its partnership with R U OK? to promote mental well-being.

AFAB is proud to highlight that our Industry Partner, End Food Waste Australia, and Partner Member, Goodman Fielder Food Service, are making a real impact through the Australian Food Pact—cutting food waste by 13% (16,000 tonnes) between 2022 and 2024, saving $57 million, and preventing 505,000 tonnes of CO₂-e emissions. Despite a 19% production increase, they’ve donated 254 million meals, repurposed 76% of food waste, and achieved full adoption of the Food Waste Hierarchy among signatories, driving industry-wide change. New tool to verify Australian food product claims

CSIRO has launched Isotopes, a new tool that consolidates isotopic data to verify Australian food claims about origin, sustainability, and trade compliance. By using isotopic “fingerprints” to trace where food is grown and its environmental impact, the tool supports transparency and helps develop sustainability standards in agriculture and food exports. Developed with Geoscience Australia, ANSTO, and the National Measurement Institute, Isotopes will expand to include fisheries and aquaculture data, aligning with industry goals for supply chain trust and food safety as part of the National Agricultural Traceability Strategy.

In 2024, the QSR industry experienced slower growth, with 178 new stores opening—down from 226 in 2023. Guzman y Gomez led expansion with 27 new outlets, followed by KFC, Zambrero, McDonald’s, and Subway. Major brands like KFC, Subway, and McDonald’s continued to grow overall, while Hungry Jack’s reached 471 locations. Melbourne saw the highest regional growth, and by 2025, over half of Australians will live within 3 km of 10+ QSR options.
Farm Frites plans $425m plant in the Wimmera

Fonterra partners with Mars and Nestlé on dairy farm sustainability

AFAB members Mars (Founding) and Fonterra (Supporter) have partnered with Nestlé to promote sustainability and cut emissions on dairy farms, aiming to reduce agriculture’s environmental impact. Fonterra will reward 5,000 farms meeting emissions targets with 1–5 cents per kgMS, while Mars is investing US$27M in Fonterra’s Farmer Forward Program to cut 150,000 tons of emissions by 2030 and offer up to US$15,000 in incentives. Starting in 2024, Nestlé will also provide payments to farms with the lowest emissions footprints. These efforts will support tools and services to boost emissions efficiency across an estimated 87% of Fonterra farms.

The AFAB State of Play report 2024 highlights the pressure Australian farmers face due to rising inflation and production costs, threatening food security. With farmers essential to providing food and clothing, it’s critical that politicians in Canberra support policies that protect the farming industry. Currently, one in three families face food insecurity, and Australia has lost 15% of its farmland in the past 30 years. Proposed water diversion plans could cut farm production by $9 billion. To safeguard our food supply, the next government must back policies that support farmers and protect Australian agriculture.

AFAB advocates for tax relief to revive Australia’s foodservice sector

AFAB is thrilled to announce the Coalition’s proposed $20,000 capped tax deduction for business-related meal and entertainment expenses, a policy that could provide a lifeline for small businesses while delivering significant benefits for Australia’s hospitality sector.
This initiative, exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), is set to help over 81,000 foodservice outlets nationwide, which employ thousands of Australians and are crucial to our economy. With 99% of hospitality businesses earning less than $10 million annually, and 91.4% earning under $2 million, this policy is designed to address the unique challenges faced by small operators.
